ME/CFS Diagnostic and Early Management Clinic

ME/CFS consultations in New Zealand

This service focuses on diagnostic assessment and early management for patients who have not yet received a confirmed diagnosis or appropriate initial guidance.

ME/CFS is a complex, disabling condition. There is no single diagnostic test or curative treatment, but structured pacing, energy management and practical symptom support can help patients stabilise and improve function.

Who this clinic prioritises

Due to increasing demand, priority is given to patients who are under 20 years of age, have been unwell for less than approximately six months, and have not yet received a confirmed diagnosis or specialist assessment. Exceptions may be considered where there is significant diagnostic uncertainty or another compelling clinical reason.

What the consultation provides

  • Diagnostic clarification
  • Consideration of alternative diagnoses
  • An initial pacing and symptom-management plan
  • A comprehensive letter for ongoing GP care

Ongoing care

Following assessment, patients are usually discharged back to their GP with a comprehensive management plan. Further specialist review is arranged only where clinically indicated.

Established ME/CFS

Patients with an established diagnosis generally benefit most from GP-led ongoing care, supported by patient organisations and evidence-based educational resources.
